We're offering more than $80,000 in prizes! Attend MatadorHacks for your chance to win internship opportunities, Amazon vouchers, cool tech, and more. Check out our Devpost for more info.

MatadorHacks is committed to providing students from any background equal opportunities to explore technology. We're especially focused on providing personalized support for underprivileged hackers and those from underrepresented groups in STEM through tailored workshops, mentorship, and other resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an event where teams of students work together to create a software or hardware project from scratch. They can get help from mentors, attend workshops, and participate in fun activities while getting free food, drinks, and swag. At the end of the competition, students will pitch their project to judges. The top projects will win amazing prizes!

Who can attend?

Only high schoolers can attend MatadorHacks. If you've graduated from high school, you can apply to be a mentor (email us at [email protected])

What if I don't know how to code?

That's totally fine! All students, regardless of coding experience, are welcome. We will be hosting workshops designed for those with little prior experience, and experienced mentors will be present to answer any questions that you may have.

What should I bring?

Attendees are required to bring a valid student ID and signed waiver. Laptops, chargers, power strips, sleeping bags, and toiletries are highly recommended as well.

How big can teams be?

Teams can be up to four people. While you can attend as an individual, we strongly suggest that you collaborate with at least one other person. If you don't have a team beforehand, we'll have team formation sessions to match you with the right people.

What makes MatadorHacks different?

In short - attendee experience. The long answer:

1. Prizes - Although the exact prizes aren't finalized, we're going to be purchasing thousands of dollars worth of amazing items (think game consoles, the hottest tech, and gift cards for each winning team member) to motivate attendees to create the best projects they possibly can.

2. Food - MatadorHacks will be serving high quality meals and snacks to all our attendees for free. We'll have vegeratian options on hand, and we can accomodate other dietary restrictions (let us know when you sign up!)

3. Other fun stuff - Throughout the hackathon, we're going to be giving away free goodies and raffling off the latest tech. We'll also have cup stacking, ping pong, video games, and much more!

How much does it cost to attend?

Nothing! Thanks to our generous sponsors, MatadorHacks is free to attend. We'll cover the food, workspace, swag, and prizes. Leave your wallet at home, and bring your creativity and coding skills!

What can I do at MatadorHacks?

You will spend a portion of the time working on your project and competing for prizes. But that's not all! We'll be providing free premium food to all attendees, and there will be table tennis, video games, board games, and much more for you to enjoy.

Do I need to stay for the entire hackathon?

No. However, doors will be closed between 10 PM on Saturday and 6:30 AM on Sunday. You also need to be signed out by your legal guardian.

Is there a theme?

Although there isn't a specific theme that your project must follow, we'll have category prizes for projects that solve a particular issue or use specific APIs and products. All projects will be judged based on the same criteria.
